Introduction: Moral development is one of the fundamental concepts in psychology, and the function of morality is to provide essential guidelines for determining how human conflicts can be resolved and the mutual interests of communities can be optimized. Evidence suggests that stable individual differences play a role in morality. Therefore, one of the components that has attracted the attention of researchers is emotional experience. The present study was conducted to examine the relationship between moral judgment and moral behavior and to investigate the mediating role of emotional intelligence.
Material and Methods: In terms of its purpose, this study was fundamental in nature, and in terms of data collection method, it employed a descriptive-correlational design. The statistical population consisted of all students at the Khazar University, during the 2023–2024 academic year. From this population, 150 participants were selected using convenience sampling. The data collection instruments included the short form of Rest’s Moral Stories (1973), Swanson and Hill’s (1993) 15-item Moral Behavior Inventory, and the Bradberry Emotional Intelligence Scale. Data were analyzed using Spearman’s correlation coefficient in SPSS version 27 and structural equation modeling in SmartPLS.
Results: Data analysis showed that moral judgment had a significant effect on moral behavior. Emotional intelligence was a significant predictor of moral behavior. Emotional intelligence also played a mediating role in the relationship between moral judgment and moral behavior.
Conclusion: Among the implications of the present study is that emotional intelligence in individuals can influence their lifestyle and guiding principles and may serve as an appropriate guide in difficult decisions and challenging situations.
